For every book we release, we’ll be sure to post a review of it during the month before the book comes out. Our next book, The Forger of Faces by Catherine Butzen, is a riveting romantasy perfect for fans of Ilona Andrews or Isabel Ibañez, and will be published on August 1st. This review comes from Harper Smith. Take it away, Harper. . . . Theo, Seth, and Aki are back and dealing with more (in Aki’s words) “spooky shit” in this riveting sequel to Painter of the Dead. This time, they’ve flown to New York City to help another museum with an exhibit. Things are going as expected, until their fellow artists and curators start to behave . . . oddly. As more and more people become tense and edgy, and Theo hears ghastly voices and sees red mist creeping through the museum, she realizes something is very wrong in the supernatural world. The trio investigates, and it soon becomes clear that a curse or haunting will need to be broken or exorcised. With Seth’s knowledge of ancient Egyptian spells and rituals, plus Theo’s experience as a priestess, they make the perfect team for the job. Problem is, there’s a flesh-and-blood killer who finds out what they’re up to and brings deadly force to stop them. Catherine Butzen once again does an excellent job of sucking you into the world of her book. Her atmospheric prose places you right there alongside her well-developed and loveable characters. In book one, we have the beginning of Seth and Theo’s romance. In this sequel, Butzen develops their relationship with its ups and downs and pressure from family to break it off. Despite conflict, the couple learn to work together, compromise, and trust each other. Theo is a strong female lead with a unique way of seeing the world, and Seth’s character is developed much more, with flashbacks from his past sprinkled throughout, and as we see the skilled way he manages his company and legal problems. The characters’ lives are fully fleshed-out and realistic, despite one of them being an undead immortal. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys billionaire or age-gap romance, or romantasy stories with more mature characters. And who doesn’t love a spunky, smart-mouthed side character like Aki? His punchy (and potty-mouthed) dialogue had me in stitches throughout the book. I also enjoyed the development of his and Seth’s relationship. Now, tell us, Catherine . . . will Aki ever ask Sandy out? Many thanks, Harper! Check out Catherine’s author interview for this book here. A character interview and our top ten favorite quotes from The Forger of Faces are coming soon! The Forger of Faces is book 2 in the Shades of Immortality series. It stands alone well, but we recommend reading book 1, Painter of the Dead, first, to see how Theo and Seth’s adventures all began. As an Amazon associate, we earn from qualifying purchases.
