It’s spooky season, and that’s claws for celebration in our book! If you, like we, are in the mood for some books with a little bite to them, read on. This week, we’re recommending some excellent vampire and werewolf books. (Note: Pumpkin spice may be all the rage right now, but there’s not much spice* in these. We’re sure there are tons of other lists out there that have spicy recommendations, so we’re providing an alternative.) 1. The Vampire Files series by P.N. Elrod: Jack Fleming, a journalist-turned-vampire in 1930s Chicago, navigates his new undead life while solving mysteries and dealing with the city’s criminal underworld and other supernatural beings. 2. The Wolfman by Jonathan Maberry: companion novel to the 2010 movie. Lawrence Talbot returns to his ancestral home in Wales and is bitten by a werewolf, leading to a terrifying transformation that forces him to confront his cursed fate while investigating a series of brutal murders in the nearby village. 3. Sunshine by Robin McKinley: Rae “Sunshine” Seddon, a baker with a rare magical ability, is captured by vampires but forms an unlikely alliance with a vampire named Constantine to combat a greater evil, challenging her perceptions of humanity and the supernatural world. 4. By These Ten Bones by Clare B. Dunkle: werewolves in medieval Scotland. (One of Sarah’s absolute favorites!) A mysterious young man comes to a small Highland town and soon wins the admiration of the weaver’s daughter, Maddie. Fascinated by the silent carver, she sets out to gain his trust, only to find herself drawn into a terrifying secret that threatens everything she loves. 5. The Vampire Tapestry by Suzy McKee Charnas: a slice-of-life drama that follows anthropologist Dr. Edward Weyland, who’s actually a centuries-old vampire. He lives a mostly normal life as a college professor but hunts humans for their blood, though he also has some empathy toward them. 6. Twilight Forever Rising by Lena Meydan: a dark fantasy set in a world where vampire clans coexist with humans. It focuses on Darel Ericson of the Vampiric Clan Dahanavar, who navigates clan politics, a forbidden love, and a prophecy that could alter the future of both vampires and humans. 7. Interview with the Vampire by Anne Rice: Do we really need to summarize this lush, spellbinding, and terribly famous gothic horror novel? ;) Have you seen the new TV show? It’s on our watch list! 8. Werewolf Cop by Andrew Klavan: While hunting a brutal gangster, detective Zach Adams is attacked by a beast under the full moon. Now the good cop has innocent blood on his own hands. Zach must break the curse, but it also might help him find the crime boss and bring him to justice. 9. Those Who Hunt the Night by Barbara Hambly: James Asher, a spy who fought for Britain on every continent, finally retires. But the arrival of a vampire named Don Simon shatters his peace. Simon forces James to help him figure out who’s killing London’s vampires . . . before James becomes a victim himself. 10. Companions of the Night by Vivian Vande Velde: Kerry, a teenage girl, unwittingly becomes involved in the world of vampires when she tries to help a young man named Ethan. This leads to a dangerous adventure that challenges her perceptions of good and evil. 11. This Is Not a Werewolf Story by Sandra Evans: Okay, the title says it all, but we absolutely love this middle-grade novel! Raul is a quiet, lonely kid who attends an island boarding school and longs for the parents he’s lost. Raul has a secret he hides from everyone: something mysterious happens to him every month. And who is the white wolf that runs with him during those times? What’s your favorite vampire and/or werewolf book? Tell us in the comments!
