Our newest book, The Last Partner by Deborah J. Natelson, comes out tomorrow, October 1st! This action-packed dark fantasy drama (book 1 of The Midnight Files) features grumpy-sunshine partners and is perfect for fans of Supernatural and The X-Files. Need a bit more convincing to read the book? Then check out the 10 awesome quotes from The Last Partner that we’ve compiled below!
1. “There are no innocents in Horror, only enemies and victims,” Lawrence said. “When we are inside, you will kill everything you see, no matter what it looks like, unless I indicate otherwise. Once we reach the Heart, you will unravel it while I cover you. Only after that will we track down and release any surviving victims. If we become separated, what do you do?”

Daisy palmed a handful of spare sun pellets. “Kill everything I see. Even if it looks like you.”

2. “That’s the third time you’ve tried to ensorcell me. I told you that what passes in Romance won’t in Horror,” her partner went on scornfully, “but you were too wrapped up in your grievances to listen.”

3. The Horror Path was not a corridor but a staircase, a dubious structure of cracked concrete and black mold that stretched endlessly down. It was narrow enough that, if she had lain upon it, she could have wrapped her fingers around either side at once. Beyond it lay only an abyss of bottomless dark and pitiless cold and the feeling of something hungry and vast watching her.

4. “What are you doing?” Daisy breathed, clutching Lawrence’s sleeve. “Regulations state we light no unnecessary lights. You’ll draw the dead right to us!”

Lawrence gave her a sarcastic look and kept the light steady. “Fear is a greater enemy than anything dead.”

“I’m not afraid!”

“Would it please you better for me to think you a liar or a fool? Shut up; there will be wanderers.”

5. Daisy’s legs and lungs shrieked, but she kept running and kept firing until the dead were no longer awake or asleep but merely dead, and the world had reverted to what was real.

Lawrence laid the boy on the grass. He was bruised and would wake horribly hungry and thirsty and traumatized, but there was a village nearby, and he would survive. That was as much as you could hope for, after a Horror.

6. NDA: an organization so secret only its initials were known. The letters probably, it was said by people in the know, stood for National Defense Agency. For safety, many people referred to it as the Non-Disclosure Agency, but Mijo had come up with a better nickname:

The Denials. Not men in black, because you noticed black. Denial agents blended into everyday society, with their manufactured smiles, fabricated uniforms, and laminated identification cards as perfect as the real thing because they were the real thing, though they had been printed only the day before.

7. Brilliant, unsullied light burst through the Heart. Smooth, icy, and searingly bright, it pierced the main knot of threads and kept going, directly into the place Daisy had stood an instant earlier. The Heart beat once against the light and then burst, lashing shockwaves back down its threads, the shattering of bone and glass filling the universe.

8. He simply could not be the sort of agent that Agent Lawrence was, so he would have to be the sort of agent he was, and trust that Agent Lawrence would neglect nothing essential in her preparations. As for Agent Allen--

No. As for Daisy, he would protect her against whatever came.

9. Tinsley’s momentum shot her past, and she stumbled and skidded into the wall.  She pushed off and came back, even as Oswald attacked in a blur of sports jacket, switchblade expertly open in his hand. Mist swirled thickly around them, dancing up to shoulder height, thick and wet and sticky. It filled their eyes and sped their movements with ability they had not possessed before.

10. Tears streamed down Vivienne’s transfixed face, and a small animal noise escaped her lips. “How long has it been?” she cried. “Why didn’t she rescue me? You shouldn’t have come. It’s feeding on me!” She was sobbing now, truly sobbing with great, audible gulps. Daisy hoped Lawrence could hear them.
