Truly Epic Fantasy Quest Books

Today we're hot on the trail of some great fantasy quest books. Tolkien about knights, wizards, and dragons really gets us fired up! So let us venture forth—onward to the list!

(Need we even state the very obvious, The Lord of the Rings trilogy?)

1. The Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan*: an epic fantasy saga set in a world where the balance of power and destiny is determined by the Wheel of Time. A diverse cast of characters become embroiled in a battle between Light and Shadow, aiming to break the cycle of ages and save their world from destruction.

2. The Chronicles of Prydain series by Lloyd Alexander: Taran, an assistant pig-keeper, grows from a boy into a hero. His quest is to prevent a dark warlord from dominating the land of Prydain, and to discover his own identity and destiny.

3. The Derkholm duology by Diana Wynne Jones: In a fantasy world dominated by tours run by a mysterious company, a family of wizards and magical creatures must undertake a quest to save their land from exploitation and restore balance.

4. The Shadow of the Fox trilogy by Julie Kagawa: Young half-kitsune Yumeko and her companions embark on a perilous journey to locate and protect the 3 parts of the Scroll of a Thousand Prayers, in order to stop a great evil from summoning the dragon god and making a wish.

5. The Codex Alera series by Jim Butcher: (It has a lot of quest-like plotlines.) Inhabitants of the land of Alera control elemental powers called furies. A young man, Tavi, strives to protect his homeland while uncovering hidden truths about his world's history and magic.

6. Children of Blood and Bone (Legacy of Orïsha #1) by Tomi Adeyemi: Zélie Adebola embarks on a dangerous quest to restore magic to the land of Orïsha and overthrow a ruthless monarchy, alongside her brother and a reluctant princess, while facing personal challenges and uncovering deep-rooted secrets.

7. The City of Dreaming Books by Walter Moers: part of the wildly imaginative Zamonia series. Yarnspinner goes on a quest to Bookholm, a.k.a. The City of Dreaming Books, but soon falls into the clutches of the city's evil genius. He traps Yarnspinner in the catacombs beneath the city, where reading books can be genuinely dangerous.

8. Sunbolt (Sunbolt Chronicles #1) by Intisar Khanani: Hitomi, a young thief with magical abilities, becomes entangled in a deadly political conspiracy, leading her on a quest to uncover the truth, protect those she cares about, and ultimately confront a powerful and dangerous sorcerer.

9. Sabriel (Old Kingdom #1) by Garth Nix: Sabriel sets off on a dangerous journey to rescue her father, a necromancer, and prevent a great evil from being unleashed. Sabriel's quest takes her through a land of danger and mystery, where magic and death are intertwined.

10. The Thief (The Queen’s Thief #1) by Megan Whalen Turner: Thief Gen boasts that he can steal anything . . . and promptly lands in jail. But then the king's magus conscripts him for a quest to steal a legendary object. Having no choice, Gen goes along with the party, but he secretly works out plans of his own.

11. The Rag and Bone Chronicles by Jeff Ayers: She stole your heart in Skate the Thief, and now spunky young Skate the Seeker is on a mission: to resurrect her mentor. She and her companions have magic guiding them, but it isn't without its flaws—nightmare-inducing ones. . . .
