Well, deck our halls—it's almost the end of 2023! We feel like this year flew by at warp speed, while we were busily working on our little enterprise. (Star Trek puns intended!) We hope you're having safe, warm, happy holidays! Today we're bringing you tidings of comfort books and joy. We asked all of the Thinklings authors what they like to read at this time of year, and here are their responses: In alphabetical order... Remy Apepp: Haven't read it in years, but I suppose a family fave is the Tiffany Aching series by Terry Pratchett. We read a lot of Terry Pratchett when I was younger. Most other books I remember liking are ones I only read because of English literature classes in college and are all existential or Gothic or some kind of detective fiction or such. Sarah Awa: The holidays get me in the mood to read (or watch) something classic like The Lord of the Rings trilogy, the Harry Potter series, or the Time Quintet or Austin Family Chronicles by Madeleine L'Engle. I love the gentleness of her writing, which gives it a comforting quality. Jeff Ayers: My go-to reads around the holidays are the Cleric Quintet by R. A. Salvatore and the Harry Potter books, especially 4-7. Catherine Butzen: To me, holidays mean family, and family means reading aloud! We pick old favorites (like The Hobbit) or collections of funny short stories, and pass the book around the circle. Each person reads aloud in turn. If the family isn't together, then this is definitely the time of year for rereading comedies, fluffy romances, lightweight action-adventure, and fairy tales. We're heading into the longest nights of the year, so we need some laughter to bring the light back. Laura Loomis: I rarely reread because I'm trying to keep my TBR pile from falling on me, but I make an exception for my favorite romance, Red, White, and Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston. Right now I'm reading The Shepherd's Crown by Terry Pratchett—thank goodness he wrote so many books! Pratchett is hilarious even when he’s writing about serious topics. Deborah Natelson: I read A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens every year. I read it because I love it, and I love it because my dad read it aloud to my family every year at Christmas. Then, after he had vocal cord surgery and couldn't read that long at a stretch, we split it up. He read the beginning and the end, and my sisters and I each read aloud our favorite of the spirits: my elder sister the Ghost of Christmas Past, I the Ghost of Christmas Present, and my little sister the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come. (You may have recognized a reference to this book in Bargaining Power....) Katherine Vick: I would probably go with Hogfather by Terry Pratchett (a fantasy version of Christmas and a great deal of fun) or Good Omens by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman (probably my favourite book so always up for a reread). BONUS: Here's a funny, Christmas-themed poem that Katherine wrote! BONUS #2: Still not sure what to spend your new Amazon gift card(s) on? Check out our Gift Guide for the Geeks in Your Galaxy!
