Character Interview for Hunter's Moon

For every book we release, we'll feature an interview with one of its major characters. This week we sat down to chat with Jocelyn ("Jos") Beaumont from Hunter's Moon. Read below to see what main character Melanie's enigmatic friend and housemate had to say.
We’re here at Wellsboro University, in northern Pennsylvania, talking to student Jocelyn Beaumont. Thanks for meeting with us, Jos.

Sure, no problem. Just—please don’t publish this in the school paper, okay?

No worries, we won’t. So, tell us: How did you first meet Melanie Caldwell?

We had trig together with Dr. Snooze in freshman year. Mel and I both like to hide in the back, so we frequently sat near each other. She was so quiet and studious, I figured she’d be a cool person to talk to. No drama . . . unlike her roommate. I’d judged correctly about Mel—that is, until last fall, when a whole lot of drama found her.

We can tell you’re less than thrilled about what’s been going on. But how do you feel about Melanie herself?

She’s smart, sane, and sweet. But I worry about her sometimes. Mel has a tendency to get carried away by strong emotions, though 98% of the time she’s a very reasonable person. She’s been through a lot this year, and though I question some of her decisions, it’s not my place to run her life. That doesn’t mean I want to see things go badly for her. But I, unlike someone else, realize I’m not her mom.

Is that your life philosophy: hands-off and mind your own business?

Yeah, laissez faire, live and let live. Or live and let be undead? I’ve long suspected there are those among us who are . . . not quite human. Whoever or whatever else is out there, I’m intrigued and would love to make contact. “There are more things in heaven and Earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy.”

Are there any misconceptions you’d like to correct about yourself?

We goths are not scary. (Well, okay, maybe some of us are.) I’m not cold-hearted either; I just prioritize logic over jumping to conclusions and flying off the handle before knowing all the facts.

Sounds like a wise approach. Ideally, what would you like to do next?

I’d like to find some friends who have absolutely no drama in their life! Ha, ha. Well, it keeps things interesting around here, anyway. Joking aside, I want to help Mel however I can. I’d like to [redacted; spoiler] my arm. I’d also like perfect grades, a nice car, for my brothers to get lives and stop dating airheads, and an all-expenses-paid trip to Romania or the Swiss Alps—for the entire summer. (You did say “ideally.”)

That we did. One final question: Would you rather become a ghost, werewolf, or vampire, and why?

Okay, now you sound like you’re referencing a certain TV show I love—or like you’re telling a joke.

Well, I can say for sure I would definitely not choose werewolf. And I’d rather stay corporeal, and not be forced to haunt anyplace or anyone, if that’s how ghosts work. So I guess that leaves vampire. Hey, I’ve already got the look! But if sparkles and excessive angst are involved, I’ll have to reconsider. . . . Can I just choose “dragon”? I like that option way better.

For the sake of having this interview not drag on (get it?) . . . yes.

Dang, you’re just as bad as my author with those puns.

I am your author.

NOOOOOOOO!!!!! *jumps off Cloud City maintenance platform*

We love to have fun with our characters, authors, stories, and fans! Don’t worry; Jocelyn fell straight into a plot hole and was safely transported back to Wellsboro, where she will be joining Melanie in book 2 and (probably) beyond.

Dragon would definitely be my pick. Or mermaid, but it's hard for mermaids to be writers.

Lol! Agreed. I'd probably go with either dragon or elf or something. I guess it would be hard for unicorns to write, too. Unless psychic powers. :D
